College

WARNING: This is purely off the top of my head. No sturcture besides what I give it as I type this out.

College, or University, whatever you want to call it, it is still the only post secondary I have ever done. Most of the time there was spent exploring a few darker corners of the interweb, but thats not what this is going to be about. This is going to be about how I would make my college, yeah lets call it college from here on out, life would be, if I were to make a mocumentry about it.

First the main character, but not the hero of the story. I know surprising, but not uncommon. Look at the famous starwars movie, all six of them. The only main character is Artoo. Yet he is never the hero of the story, or stories. He is just there observing, and telling his story. The Same would be true for me and my college days.

I am the main character. The key qualities would be smart enough to pass most things without studying, though latter on in years would need to study the harder courses. A character that is shy, and due to this shyness he is a lonar. He spends most of his time by himself for the first little bit. The first twenty minutes would be the first year of college, and how one of his dorm mate does a horrible prank on him, another dorm mate stands up for him, and he learns that college life is rather easy.

A secondary character that the main would met and one of the few non staff characters to stay around for the full time of this mocumentary is the quirky librarian which the main character is indifferent too. While everyone else seems to out right pick on him. Hes an old school typical geek to boot.

The Second year would also be short and quick. The main character would need to redo the one course he failed. The only major course he would need to move on after year two of College. He would also met another side character here, whos primary function is to get the Main character to find out one of the cafeteria lady sells meat, like steak and jerky. Good quality, which the Main Character purchases several times over the course of his schooling.

The Second year also is the first time we are introduced to the couple. The Couple is two very studious people, who are kind and fun people though they are work aholics.

To make things easier, and becuase the third year was blur I am going to combine this with the fourth year. Which will make it look more normal due to reality it took me five years. So therefore something family related or some other reason happens and our main character misses a year of school. I think that will important to happen here.

This is where the plot thickens. The Main character starts to think no one cares about him after coming back and starts hanging out with his room mate, and drinking expensive liqour, and never the cheap stuff. This gets him noticed by one man, the fighter. An older student who does fighting once or twice a year. This man is the hero of our story. I know its a bit late to introduce him, but he is the one that solves the problem and wins the day so to speak.

He cares about our Main Character. Wants to help make his life better. So the first thing he does is make Main Character a part of his clique. This includes the Main Character, The Fighter, The Couple, The Religious Chick, The two Orriental Guys, The True Nerd, the Basket Baller, and Political Nerd.

We have already discussed a number of these people briefly. So lets go to the next character I guess that would be the Religious Chick. RC from here on out. She is the heart and soul of the group. Very caring and sisterly. She is a very deveoted non-Catholic branch of Christianity, but also is not the type to talk about her religion. Un known to her at the time when this takes place the Fighter has a crush on her. Also she is the one who comes up with the fun and awesume group activities.

Next was the Oriental Guys. Really different from each other. One is Very weird and foreign, while the other is foreign but trying his best to fit into the new cultural. They are both a tad older, and seem to know the Fighter from before school. They come to most the activities, but when the group does the graduation celebration paint ball tournement, they choose not to go for one reason or another.

The True Geek is a married man, who we never met his wife. This is similar to many characters in TV shows, the one that comes to my mind is how we never met the one guy on Big Bang theory's mother at all. The same is true here. He knows all about geeky things like science fiction shows, How Computer works, Computer slash Video Games, to name a few of the areas he knows a lot about. He and the fighter are the two that really think Main needs to open up, and come up with different schemes to achieve this goal.

The Basket Baller is the Main Characters connection to the colleges basket ball games, which he does end up attending a few of. When ever he does his long black trench coat and assecories he always manages to shock the crowd and some times the away team. The Basketballer is a room mate just like the fighter, well dorm mate. They get along well.

The Political Nerd doesn't come into the picture tell the conculusion of the tale. I just do not know this character enough to comment more than this. But he does go to the grad paint ball celbration. He is on the Main Characters team. He is a cool person.

The plot, well thats something that is basicly stated above. This is a man vs himself story that ends happy for the Main Character. Heck for all characters in this story it is happy story. I hope this is good for what it was made for. Hope everyone enjoyed this.

  1. R2D2? Main character? Well, that a bot-centric view of SW ...

  2. Certainly R2-D2 seems to be the only character flowing from beginning to end. He'd be a great narrator if we all could understand 'beep-boop-beep'. ;)

Anyway, sounds like a great plot design. One of the easiest ways to write something that people can connect to, is to write what you know. I have a friend who is a decent writer, but because she uses ideas from others experiences, things she reads and watches via the entertainment media, her work is often lacking the strength it needs to be truly good and connect you to it. Her work shows it immaturity, because of this.

It is quite common to base the main character after one's self. It is a great starting point. However, be creative and don't give them your name or some variation of it. Also make sure none of the other characters are named after the real people you associated with that you may have used to create said characters.

Also, it is common for the main character to not be the hero of the story. Lots of romance novels are like this. Makes for a good light read to have the hero save the damsel in distress. The damsel often being the main character, gets herself in trouble and then needs rescuing. Sometimes, a story has many heroes, it all depends on how your building your story. You may find as you are writing, that although, you didn't intentionally start with the main character being a hero, he ends being one as he uses his and the experiences of others to make a significant enough change in his life, that he's somewhat a different person, having grown throughout the life of the book.

I would caution, that you be careful to keep things simple as you are writing. Often it is too easy to add too much extras and make your story wander from it's original intent. This will cause redundancy which will have you spending all your time trying to come back to the start and ultimately confusing your readers.

You will probably find that this story will take on a life of it's own. My best advice is to just sit and write it, letting it wander where it wants to go. Then go back several times and rewrite whatever needs writing. I'm guessing this project will take at least 5 years to get it ready for publishing if that's your ultimate end goal.

I wish you much luck and look forward to seeing where this going to end up.

    Happiness,

  4. I have always wanted to write a story about my life. It would certainly be entertaining but what happens to the ending?

    1. you write as a chapter point of view. where you can turn yourself into a series of books. or, make it a work of fiction based on fact where the ending is whatever you feel like it to be.
